Founded in 2003, Skype was one of the first programs to offer video calling. The site quickly gained popularity for friends and families living in different cities, states and countries to communicate through video. Skype offers features such as:
  • Video and voice calls to anyone on Skype
  • Instant messaging
  • File sharing/screen sharing
Calls to mobile and landline numbers worldwide, text messaging and group video calls are also available for a fee.

Google has offered video chatting since around 2008, but Hangouts were started with the creation of Google+ in 2011. With the ability for multiple people to watch and participate in Hangouts, the tool has been used for virtual meetings and by brands or celebrities to share information and engage in conversations. Some of Google Hangout’s features include:
  • Video chat with up to 9 friends with no extra cost
  • Built in Google apps like Google Docs and YouTube live stream
  • Fun effects – hats, props, eye-wear, etc.
